![]() Since their sophomore release, little has been heard from Nailbomb, as Cavalera returned back to Sepultura (later leaving the group to form Soulfly) and Newport began producing other hard rock artists (including At the Drive-In, Samiam, and Will Haven, among others). Peligro, Biohazard bassist Evan Seinfeld, and Front Line Assembly/Fear Factory keyboardist Rhys Fulber. In addition to the duo, most of Cavalera's then-bandmates from Sepultura (guitarist Andreas Kisser and drummer Igor Cavalera) and Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares made special guest appearances on Nailbomb's debut recording for Roadrunner Records, 1994's Point Blank, while the group's final release, 1995's Proud to Commit Commercial Suicide, featured appearances from former Dead Kennedys drummer D.H. ![]() Although both of the bandmembers' full-time bands specialized in extreme metal sounds, Nailbomb somehow found a way to create even more dense and harsh metallic sounds (it also proves to be more repetitive, with the odd sample and drum machine detected here and there). We didn’t care what anyone else thought of it, and it sort of attracts people when you do that.Nailbomb was a brief project between ex-Sepultura singer/guitarist Max Cavalera and ex-Fudge Tunnel singer/guitarist Alex Newport. It was just DIY punk fun, which is probably why it turned into such a cult record. Q: Did it feel good to not have label pressure to follow a formula?Ī: There was definitely no pressure! At the time, Sepultura had pressure to deliver, but nobody even knew about Nailbomb, so we could do whatever we wanted. Like, walking very much on the edge of cheesy. I love the simplicity of it it’s simple to the point of ridiculous, so basic, and it’s on the fine line between cheesy and good. We thought, why not mix the two? The perfect examples are the songs Sick Life and Cockroach, where the beginning is very Fudge Tunnel, and then it goes into one of my riffs. So we were showing each other our different styles, and it clicked. It feels good to play live.Ī: Alex wanted to know how I wrote my Sepultura thrash riffs, like Desperate Cry, and I wanted to know how he played his Fudge Tunnel riffs. It was made to be played live, even though it was a project. You know, I always thought it was a kick-ass record that deserved to be heard on tour. Especially with Nailbomb, because lyrically it’s right on the money with what’s going on these days, especially on songs like Cockroaches, Religious Cancer and World of S–t. Was it strange to shift gears like that?Ī: No, it’s cool, because when you’re playing these albums you’re finding something new in them. ![]() Q: You just did a tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album Roots by your former band Sepultura. When Soulfly decided to launch a fall tour, it wasn't to support their latest album, 2015's Archangel, or to bang out a set of greatest hits.Instead, frontman Max Cavalera wanted to play Point Blank the sole studio release from his 1994 industrial sludge/groove side project Nailbomb, featuring Fudge Tunnel singer/guitarist Alex Newport in its entirety. Actually, we were going to call the project 1000 Percent Hate before we changed it to Nailbomb, which was better, because it described the sound so well: a lethal bomb full of exploding nails. Nailbomb was a side project by Sepulturas Max Cavalera and producer/. We didn’t have an agenda at the time, we just wrote all of these p-ed off songs. Limited 180gm audiophile vinyl LP pressing including insert. The album combines the thrash-metal fury of Sepultura with the robotic industrial clangor of Fudge Tunnel. This is an ass-kicking album, that is. Point Blank is their only studio album, originally released in 1994 by Roadrunner Records. Q: It must feel cleansing to go out and play such an unremittingly ferocious album as Point Blank.Ī: It does! That record fired in all directions. Nailbomb was a side project by Sepultura's Max Cavalera and producer/engineer Alex Newport in the mid-1990s. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.
